🇫🇷 Unit Exam 2 — Studying and working

Cambridge IGCSE French 0520 · Unit Assessment practice · production, not recognition

⏱ 90:0050 marksVery challenging — deliberately
How this works. Everything here runs English → French, because that is the direction the unit exam needs. Type your answers — accents count, and every noun needs its article. Your work saves itself as you type. When you finish (or when the timer dies), press Finish and mark: the model answers appear with the classic error named under each one, and you award yourself each mark honestly with the checkboxes. Section C is marked against a 15-point checklist, with three real exemplar answers to compare against.

Section A — Vocabulary production

15 marks · 1 each
Fill each gap with the French for the English in brackets. Nouns need their article (le / la / l’ / les), exactly as the Production Lab drills them.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the lesson) de français commence à neuf heures.
Model answer: le cours
le cours — with the silent s even in the singular. Careful with its sound-alikes: la cour is the playground, court means short.
Vocabulary — write the French
Je fais ______ (the homework) dans ma chambre.
Model answer: les devoirs
les devoirs — ALWAYS plural for homework. Singular le devoir means duty, which is a different thing entirely.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the secondary school, ages 11 to 15) se trouve près de chez moi.
Model answer: le collège
le collège — false friend: NOT a university college. In France you attend le collège at 11 and le lycée at 15.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the sixth-form college) de ma ville prépare les élèves au bac.
Model answer: le lycée
le lycée — masculine despite the -ée ending, which usually signals feminine. Le musée plays the same trick.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the office) de mon père est au cinquième étage.
Model answer: le bureau
le bureau — the same word does double duty: the office AND the desk inside it. Plural bureaux, with an x.
Vocabulary — write the French
Avant l’entretien, j’ai envoyé ______ (the CV) à l’entreprise.
Model answer: le CV
le CV — said « cé-vé », masculine, and it never expands: nobody writes curriculum vitae on 0520.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the employee) a demandé un meilleur salaire.
Model answer: l'employé
l’employé — the -é one is hired, the -eur one (employeur) hires. One letter swaps who pays whom.
Vocabulary — write the French
Elle travaille le week-end pour ______ (to earn money).
Model answer: gagner de l'argent
gagner de l’argent — French EARNS money with gagner (the same verb as winning). The anglicism *faire de l’argent is the error this question exists to catch.
Vocabulary — write the French
Après ses études, il va ______ (to look for work) à Paris.
Model answer: chercher du travail
chercher du travail — NO preposition after chercher: it already contains the “for”. *Chercher pour du travail is word-for-word English.
Vocabulary — write the French
À soixante-cinq ans, ma grand-mère va ______ (to retire).
Model answer: prendre sa retraite
prendre sa retraite — literally “to take one’s retirement”. The sa is part of the expression; *se retirer means to withdraw from a room.
Vocabulary — write the French
Tout le monde parle de ______ (the start of the school year) en septembre.
Model answer: la rentrée scolaire
la rentrée scolaire — a word English simply does not have: the grand return to school. Feminine, from rentrer.
Vocabulary — write the French
J’ai laissé ______ (the laptop) dans la salle de classe.
Model answer: l'ordinateur portable
l’ordinateur portable — careful: le portable on its own means the mobile PHONE. For the computer, keep ordinateur in.
Vocabulary — write the French
Elle a mis la photo sur ______ (the social network) préféré des jeunes.
Model answer: le réseau social
le réseau social — réseau is masculine, so social with no -e. Plural: les réseaux sociaux, both words change.
Vocabulary — write the French
Tu peux ______ (to download) l’application gratuitement.
Model answer: télécharger
télécharger — one word, two accents. It covers BOTH download and upload; direction comes from context or mettre en ligne.
Vocabulary — write the French
Si tu ne révises pas, tu vas ______ (to fail) à l’examen.
Model answer: échouer
échouer — to fail an exam is échouer à un examen. Never *faillir (that means to nearly do something). Rater exists in casual speech, but the syllabus word — and the safe exam word — is échouer.

Section B — Grammar transformations

20 marks · 1 each
Each instruction tells you the structure being tested. Write exactly what is asked — a correct sentence using a different structure scores nothing.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Aujourd’hui, j’habite en ville. Avant, j’______ (habiter) à la campagne.
Model answer: habitais
habitais — and note the elision stays: j’habitais. The h of habiter is mute, so je still contracts.
Rewrite in the imperfect
L’année dernière, vous ______ (avoir) cours le samedi matin.
Model answer: aviez
aviez — vous takes -iez. The imperfect here paints a repeated timetable in the past, exactly its job.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Quand j’étais au collège, nous ______ (regarder) des films en classe.
Model answer: regardions
regardions — build it from the present nous regardons: drop -ons, add -ions. Mechanical, and it works for every verb except être.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Elle ______ (vouloir) devenir vétérinaire quand elle était petite.
Model answer: voulait
voulait — a wish held over time is imperfect, not perfect: *elle a voulu devenir would mean one single moment of wanting, which is not what childhood dreams are.
Put the verb in the conditional
S’il y avait moins de circulation, j’______ (aller) au travail à vélo.
Model answer: irais
irais — j’irais not j’irai: the conditional carries the -ais ending you can hear as ‘eh’, the future as ‘ay’. And the stem is the strange little ir-, from aller.
Put the verb in the conditional
Nous ______ (aimer) faire un stage dans cette entreprise.
Model answer: aimerions
aimerions — conditional = future stem (aimer-) + imperfect ending (-ions). Nous aimerions is the polite “we would like” that opens every good letter of application.
Put the verb in the conditional
Vous ______ (recevoir) un meilleur salaire dans cette société.
Model answer: recevriez
recevriez — irregular stem recevr- + -iez. If you wrote *recevoiriez, you kept the whole infinitive: only -er and -ir verbs do that.
quand + future
Quand tu ______ (être) grand, tu choisiras ton métier.
Model answer: seras
seras — “when you ARE grown up” is English present, French FUTURE: quand tu seras grand. Stem ser-, and the second verb (choisiras) is future too.
quand + future
Quand ils ______ (avoir) leurs résultats, ils choisiront une université.
Model answer: auront
auront — after quand French uses the FUTURE where English uses the present. Stem aur- + -ont: ils auront.
quand + future
Quand je ______ (finir) mon stage, je chercherai un emploi.
Model answer: finirai
finirai — regular -ir future: whole infinitive + -ai. The trap is drifting back to the present (*quand je finis… je chercherai) because the English says “when I finish”.
Make it negative with ne … plus
Elle travaille encore comme serveuse ? → Non, … (write the full sentence)
Model answer: Non, elle ne travaille plus comme serveuse.
Non, elle ne travaille plus comme serveuse. — ne … plus = not any more. Encore disappears; and note comme serveuse, no article after comme + job.
Make it negative with ne … jamais
Il est quelquefois en retard au bureau. → (never)
Model answer: Il n’est jamais en retard au bureau.
Il n’est jamais en retard au bureau. — ne elides to n’ before est; forgetting the elision (*il ne est) costs the mark as surely as forgetting ne altogether.
Make it negative with ne … rien
Tu as tout vendu ? → Non, je … (write the full answer)
Model answer: Non, je n’ai rien vendu.
Non, je n’ai rien vendu. — rien sits between the auxiliary and the participle: je n’ai rien vendu. Word-for-word English order (*je n’ai vendu rien) is the classic slip.
Form the question with inversion
Vous travaillez dans l’informatique. → (ask the question)
Model answer: Travaillez-vous dans l’informatique ?
Travaillez-vous dans l’informatique ? — verb, hyphen, pronoun. No -t- needed here: travaillez already ends in z, a consonant sound bridge.
Form the question with inversion
Elle arrive quand ? → (ask it with inversion)
Model answer: Quand arrive-t-elle ?
Quand arrive-t-elle ? — arrive ends in a vowel and elle starts with one, so French inserts the -t- purely for sound: arrive-t-elle.
Possessive pronoun
Mes résultats sont bons ; ______ (yours — to a friend) sont excellents.
Model answer: les tiens
les tiens — plural because les résultats is plural: the pronoun copies the NOUN’s number and gender, never the owner’s. To a friend = tien forms, not vôtre.
Possessive pronoun
Notre entreprise est petite ; ______ (theirs) est énorme.
Model answer: la leur
la leur — feminine because l’entreprise is feminine. And leur as a possessive pronoun never takes an s in the singular: la leur, one company of theirs.
Disjunctive pronoun
Tu viens au cinéma avec ______ (me) ?
Model answer: moi
moi — after a preposition, je is impossible: avec moi, chez toi, pour lui, sans eux. The disjunctive set exists precisely for this position.
Write the year in words
Écris l’année en toutes lettres : 2027.
Model answer: deux mille vingt-sept
deux mille vingt-sept — mille never takes an s, even after deux. (Million does: deux millions. Mille does not — the pair is a favourite trick.)
Write the year in words
Écris l’année en toutes lettres : 1985.
Model answer: mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-cinq
mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-cinq — no s on quatre-vingt because cinq follows it (the s only appears when quatre-vingts ends the number), and cent stays bare after neuf here because it is followed by more number.

Section C — Directed writing

15 marks · checklist
Écris un article (80–100 mots) pour le magazine de ton lycée, intitulé « Mon avenir ». Tu dois mentionner :
  • comment tu imaginais ton avenir quand tu étais plus jeune (imparfait)
  • le métier de tes rêves et le salaire que tu recevrais (conditionnel)
  • ce que tu feras quand tu auras tes résultats d’examen (quand + futur)
0 words (target 80–100)
Mark your own writing against each line. Be harsh — the school examiner will be. One tick = one mark.

Weak answer — what not to do

Mon métier de rêve est journaliste. Quand j’étais jeune je veux être chanteuse. Je voudrais être une journaliste parce que j’aime écrire. Quand j’ai mes résultats je vais célébrer avec ma famille. Le salaire est important pour moi.
About 6 of 15. The imperfect opens correctly (j’étais) then collapses: *je veux should be je voulais — both halves of a past sentence stay past. *une journaliste — the article drops after être + profession. *Quand j’ai mes résultats, je vais… — after quand both verbs must be future (quand j’aurai… je fêterai), and *célébrer is an anglicism — French parties with fêter. Well under 80 words.

Middling answer — safe but flat

Quand j’étais plus jeune, j’imaginais un avenir simple : je voulais être chanteuse. Maintenant, mon métier de rêve, c’est journaliste. Je voudrais écrire pour un grand journal et je recevrais un bon salaire. Quand j’aurai mes résultats, je fêterai avec ma famille. Ensuite, je chercherai du travail. J’aime écrire et j’aime parler avec les gens.
About 10 of 15. The three required structures all land: j’imaginais / je voulais, je voudrais / je recevrais, quand j’aurai… je fêterai. What holds it back: the final sentences are bolted on rather than connected, there is no negation and no disjunctive range, and the two j’aime in a row repeat where ce qui me plaît, c’est… would lift the band. And at 54 words on this page’s counter it is short of the 80-word line — the length mark is lost before style is even judged.

Strong answer — the top band

15 of 15. Imperfect background done twice (j’imaginais, je voulais, je rêvais), conditional with range (je voudrais, je ne serais jamais, ne serait pas) — including a negation folded INTO a conditional, which is exactly the kind of two-for-one examiners reward — and the quand + future rule twice (quand j’aurai… je choisirai; quand je finirai… je ferai). Opinions justified with car and à mon avis, article dropped after devenir, connectives throughout, 98 words on this page’s counter. Ambitious but never reckless: every risk taken is a structure she can actually control.
Your score: 0 / 50 — out of 50. The unit exam will feel easier than this paper; that is the point.
