Cambridge IGCSE French 0520 · Unit Assessment practice · production, not recognition
⏱ 90:0050 marksVery challenging — deliberately
How this works. Everything here runs English → French, because that is the direction the unit exam needs. Type your answers — accents count, and every noun needs its article. Your work saves itself as you type. When you finish (or when the timer dies), press Finish and mark: the model answers appear with the classic error named under each one, and you award yourself each mark honestly with the checkboxes. Section C is marked against a 15-point checklist, with three real exemplar answers to compare against.
Section A — Vocabulary production
15 marks · 1 each
Fill each gap with the French for the English in brackets. Nouns need their article (le / la / l’ / les), exactly as the Production Lab drills them.
Vocabulary — write the French
Ce matin, j’ai regardé ______ (the timetable) pour voir mes cours.
Model answer: l'emploi du temps
l’emploi du temps, not l’horaire (that is a bus timetable) and never la table du temps. Three words, and emploi is masculine.
Vocabulary — write the French
Pour moi, ______ (the school subject) la plus utile, c’est l’informatique.
Model answer: la matière
la matière, not le sujet — classic false friend. Le sujet is the topic of an essay; the thing on your timetable is la matière, feminine.
Vocabulary — write the French
Mon frère étudie ______ (ICT, computing) à l’université.
Model answer: l'informatique
l’informatique — feminine, one word. Not les ordinateurs (that is the machines, not the subject).
Vocabulary — write the French
En juin, je vais ______ (to do work experience) dans une entreprise.
Model answer: faire un stage
faire un stage — the anglicism *une expérience de travail scores nothing. Un stage is the exam word for work experience.
Vocabulary — write the French
Dans ce métier, ______ (the salary) est très élevé.
Model answer: le salaire
le salaire — masculine despite the -e ending. *La salaire loses the article mark.
Vocabulary — write the French
Mon père travaille pour ______ (the company, the firm) depuis dix ans.
Model answer: l'entreprise
l’entreprise (feminine). La compagnie exists but 0520 drills l’entreprise; *la firme is an anglicism here.
Vocabulary — write the French
Dans ma région, ______ (unemployment) est un grand problème.
Model answer: le chômage
le chômage — the circumflex on the ô carries the mark, and it is masculine.
Vocabulary — write the French
J’ai parlé avec ______ (the lawyer) de mon oncle.
Model answer: l'avocat
l’avocat — yes, the same word as avocado. Context decides. After être the article would drop (il est avocat), but here the article is required.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the engineer) qui a construit ce pont est très connu.
Model answer: l'ingénieur
l’ingénieur — watch the spelling: ingé-, not the English *engineur. The accent on é is part of the word.
Vocabulary — write the French
______ (the IT specialist) a réparé mon ordinateur.
Model answer: l'informaticien
l’informaticien — built from informatique + -ien, like mécanicien, musicien. Not *le spécialiste IT.
Vocabulary — write the French
J’ai oublié ______ (the password) de mon e-mail.
Model answer: le mot de passe
le mot de passe — three words, literally “the word of passage”. Writing the English password scores zero.
Vocabulary — write the French
Ce soir, je dois ______ (to revise) pour le contrôle de maths.
Model answer: réviser
réviser, not *revisiter (that means to visit a place again). One accent, on the first é.
Vocabulary — write the French
Demain, ma classe va ______ (to sit an exam) de physique.
Model answer: passer un examen
passer un examen = to SIT the exam — the most famous false friend on the paper. To PASS it is réussir. “J’ai passé mon examen” says nothing about the result.
Vocabulary — write the French
Il a reçu ______ (the mark, the grade) qu’il voulait.
Model answer: la note
la note, not *la marque — une marque is a brand of trainers. Your grade is la note, feminine.
Vocabulary — write the French
Pendant l’entretien, ______ (the employer) m’a posé beaucoup de questions.
Model answer: l'employeur
l’employeur — one letter away from l’employé, and it swaps who pays whom. -eur hires, -é is hired.
Section B — Grammar transformations
20 marks · 1 each
Each instruction tells you the structure being tested. Write exactly what is asked — a correct sentence using a different structure scores nothing.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Maintenant, je travaille dans un bureau. Avant, je ______ (travailler) dans un magasin.
Model answer: travaillais
travaillais, not travaillait — je takes -ais. You cannot hear the difference between -ais, -ait and -aient; only the spelling carries the mark.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Quand j’étais petite, ma mère ______ (être) infirmière.
Model answer: était
était — être is the ONLY verb with an irregular imperfect stem, ét-. Every other verb builds from its nous form of the present.
Rewrite in the imperfect
Tous les étés, nous ______ (aller) chez nos grands-parents.
Model answer: allions
allions, not allons — the imperfect nous keeps the i: -ions. “Tous les étés” = repeated past habit, which is exactly what the imperfect is for.
Rewrite in the imperfect
L’année dernière, ils ______ (avoir) beaucoup de devoirs.
Model answer: avaient
avaient — sounds identical to avait. Plural subject, plural ending: -aient. This silent agreement is where the mark lives.
Put the verb in the conditional
Plus tard, je ______ (vouloir) devenir ingénieur.
Model answer: voudrais
voudrais, not voudrai — the conditional carries the -ais ending you can hear as ‘eh’, the future as ‘ay’. One letter apart on paper; the s is the whole mark.
Put the verb in the conditional
Avec un meilleur salaire, elle ______ (pouvoir) acheter un appartement.
Model answer: pourrait
pourrait — double r. The stem is pourr-, one of the twenty irregular future/conditional stems that carry most of the grammar marks.
Put the verb in the conditional
Si nous avions le temps, nous ______ (faire) un stage ensemble.
Model answer: ferions
ferions — the pattern is si + imperfect, then conditional. Never si + conditional: *si nous aurions is the classic giveaway error.
Put the verb in the conditional
Tu ______ (devoir) réviser plus si tu veux réussir.
Model answer: devrais
devrais = “you should”. devras = “you will have to” — a different tense and a different meaning, one letter apart.
quand + future
Quand j’______ (avoir) dix-huit ans, j’irai à l’université.
Model answer: aurai
aurai — after quand, French uses the FUTURE where English uses the present: “when I am eighteen” → quand j’aurai dix-huit ans. Both halves of the sentence sit in the future.
quand + future
Quand elle ______ (finir) ses études, elle cherchera du travail.
Model answer: finira
finira — English says “when she finishes” (present); French refuses: future after quand whenever the meaning is future. *Quand elle finit… elle cherchera is the error being hunted.
quand + future
Quand nous ______ (être) en vacances, nous ne parlerons plus des examens.
Model answer: serons
serons — stem ser- + -ons. Note the second verb is future too (parlerons): the quand rule drags both verbs into the future.
Make it negative with ne … plus
Il travaille encore à la banque. → Non, … (write the full sentence)
Model answer: Il ne travaille plus à la banque.
Il ne travaille plus à la banque. — ne … plus wraps the verb, and encore must GO: keeping it (*il ne travaille plus encore) contradicts the negation.
Make it negative with ne … jamais
Je fais quelquefois mes devoirs à la cantine. → (never)
Model answer: Je ne fais jamais mes devoirs à la cantine.
Je ne fais jamais mes devoirs à la cantine. — jamais replaces quelquefois; it does not sit beside it, and never *ne … pas jamais — pas and jamais refuse to share a sentence.
Make it negative with ne … rien
Tu as tout entendu ? → Non, je … (write the full answer)
Model answer: Non, je n’ai rien entendu.
Non, je n’ai rien entendu. — in the perfect, rien slips BETWEEN avoir and the participle: je n’ai rien entendu, never *je n’ai entendu rien.
Form the question with inversion
Tu travailles le samedi. → (ask the question)
Model answer: Travailles-tu le samedi ?
Travailles-tu le samedi ? — the hyphen is compulsory in inversion. Est-ce que tu travailles… is correct French but the question said inversion, so it earns nothing here.
Form the question with inversion
Elle travaille où ? → (ask it with inversion)
Model answer: Où travaille-t-elle ?
Où travaille-t-elle ? — when the verb ends in a vowel and the pronoun starts with one, French inserts -t-: travaille-t-elle. Forgetting it is the single commonest inversion error.
Possessive pronoun
J’ai oublié mon stylo — tu peux me prêter ______ (yours) ?
Model answer: le tien
le tien — possessive pronouns agree with the THING (le stylo, masculine), never with the owner. And the article is part of the pronoun: le tien, not *tien.
Possessive pronoun
Ma matière préférée, c’est la chimie. ______ (hers), c’est l’informatique.
Model answer: La sienne
La sienne — le sien / la sienne means his OR hers; French marks the gender of la matière, not the gender of the owner. English speakers reverse this constantly.
Disjunctive pronoun
Nous allons chez ______ (them — a group of boys) ce soir.
Model answer: eux
eux — after a preposition (chez, avec, pour, sans) the subject pronoun ils is impossible; French switches to the disjunctive set: moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles.
Write the year in words
Écris l’année en toutes lettres : 1999.
Model answer: mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix-neuf
mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-dix-neuf — mille NEVER takes an s; quatre-vingt only takes its s at the very end of the number (quatre-vingts) — here it is followed by dix-neuf, so no s. Hyphens throughout.
Section C — Directed writing
15 marks · checklist
Écris un e-mail (80–100 mots) à ton correspondant français sur tes projets de carrière. Tu dois mentionner :
le métier que tu voulais faire quand tu étais petit(e) (imparfait)
le métier que tu voudrais faire maintenant, et pourquoi (conditionnel)
ce que tu feras quand tu quitteras le lycée (quand + futur)
0 words (target 80–100)
Mark your own writing against each line. Be harsh — the school examiner will be. One tick = one mark.
Weak answer — what not to do
Je veux devenir un ingénieur parce que c’est bien. Quand je suis petite je veux être vétérinaire. Je voudrai travailler dans une grande companie. Quand je quitte le lycée je vais à l’université. Le salaire est bon. J’aime les maths.
About 6 of 15. Every required structure is missed: *un ingénieur — after devenir the article DROPS (devenir ingénieur); *quand je suis petite je veux — that needed the imperfect (quand j’étais petite, je voulais); *je voudrai — missing s, so it reads as future, not conditional; *quand je quitte… je vais — after quand both verbs must be FUTURE; *companie is English spelling (compagnie, or better, entreprise). Under 80 words, no connectives, no justified opinion.
Middling answer — safe but flat
Quand j’étais petite, je voulais être vétérinaire. Maintenant je voudrais devenir ingénieure parce que j’aime les maths. Quand je quitterai le lycée, j’irai à l’université. Je travaillerai dans une grande entreprise. Le salaire serait très important pour moi. J’aime aussi la physique et l’informatique. Ma mère est professeur mais je ne veux pas être professeur.
About 10 of 15. All three tenses are there and correct — j’étais, je voulais, je voudrais, quand je quitterai, j’irai — and devenir ingénieure correctly drops the article. But it reads as a list: no connectives (d’abord, ensuite, enfin), the opinion is stated but barely justified, professeur… professeur repeats where le sien / ce métier would show range, and at 55 words on this page’s counter it is SHORT of the 80-word line, so the length mark goes too. Right structures, not enough said with them.
Strong answer — the top band
Écris-moi vite !
15 of 15. Imperfect for the childhood dream (j’étais, je voulais, j’aimais), conditional twice (je voudrais, ce serait, j’aimerais), and the quand + future pair done twice over (quand je finirai… j’irai… je ferai). A negation (ne … plus), connectives (d’abord, ensuite, plus tard), justified opinions (parce que, car, à mon avis), articles dropped after devenir/être + profession, and 92 words on this page’s counter — inside the box. This is what the top band looks like: nothing exotic, everything accurate.
